Tips for Cleaning Aquarium Rocks and Fish Tank Decor
Keeping your aquarium clean is a lot of work. When it comes to changing the water, wiping the glass, and keeping your fish healthy, it involved constant upkeep. However, cleaning your aquarium rocks and your fish tanks décor is a very easy process. All it takes is a little knowledge and time. Here are some tips to make your aquarium décor cleaning as easy as one, two, three.
- Make sure your water swaps are up to date. Aquarium water with too much algae or dirty will dirty up your decorations at a much faster rate. Do monthly water changes as a way to prevent and stop new algae growth on your rocks. To keep this build up to a minimum you probably want to invest in some algae eating fish and invertebrates.
- Use bleach for cleaning. The easiest way to clean porous items like rocks, coral, and your other decorations, remove the items and out them in a container full of water. Add a half a cub of bleach and let them soak in there for a few hours. You will begin to notice the algae and dirt removing itself from the structures. Once they are as clean as can be, thoroughly rinse them and let them sit in the sun for a full day.
- You can use a steel brush and hot water to scrub away any dirt or debris as well. A wire brush is a fantastic tool for this type of work.
- You could also use your dishwasher. Place them in the dishwasher and run them through one cycle without soap. Be sure to use the hot water cycle and rinse them as thoroughly as possible. This technique is not recommended though it is mentioned to save time.
- Using the sun for drying your decorations is ideal. This will bleach your items naturally. This will take a few days so it might be a good idea to have back up decorations to keep in your tank throughout the process.
Keeping your fish tank clean is crucial. Follow these steps when you want to clean your rocks and décor the best or fastest way possible.
